It does not help that these parents are sometimes subject to prejudice by the society and at times, even deemed undeserving of help. Worse, even their children cannot escape being ridiculed by friends for having an ‘incomplete’ family.
With this scenario, it is understandable that in most countries, the government (based on one’s existing laws or guidelines) provides single parent benefits as a means of support.
Housing is one of the important benefits that they can obtain especially since not all of them are employed with a salary that is sufficient for their family’s needs. Apparently, employment is not enough to provide home for their children.
In the US, for instance, single moms, though employed, are likely to be poor due to low-income jobs which lack benefits and an opportunity for career advancement. It is further noted that one of the factors affecting this is the fact that some do not have proper education to qualify for a high-paying job.
In some cases, there are those who earn too much to qualify for some benefits and earn too little to provide even basic necessities for the family.
Fortunately, in some cities like Philadelphia, there are quite a list of programs that have very noble goals that address these concerns and give options to parents such as Women’s Community Revitalization Project, Dignity Housing, Housing Choice Voucher program and the Overington House.
The latter aims to help “homeless women who suffered from abuse and addiction” and give them opportunity to get their lives back by assisting them until they are capable enough to work independently for their children.
The guidelines for housing benefits in the Northern Ireland seem to show fair and considerate terms of granting this aid and ensure proper dissemination about how they can claim. Having started since 1971, it has obviously helped a lot of parents. In third-world countries like the Philippines, finding an appropriate shelter is a problem not just for lone parents.
Even when both parents are employed, this poses as a financial difficulty, as shown significantly in a lot of slum areas in the city and homeless people who do not have any choice but to find solace in the streets.
On a positive note, Filipino parents have more things to thank for as compared to the previous years because of the amendment of the Solo Parent Welfare Act in 2012, thereby providing more benefits for single parents.
