Parents Who Want to Adopt

By Unknown →
Birth mothers send their children for adoption for a variety of reasons. Some are in a deeply troubled situation, some are too young to carry on the responsibility of parenthood and some are financially unstable.

As mothers, they long for a bright future for their little ones. But sometimes that dream cannot become a reality in their hands, but in another’s.

There are many children waiting for parents to adopt them and give them a family they deserve. The wonderful thing about it is that there are also many parents looking to adopt children. It is just a matter of time, till they find each other – or the right match, so to speak.

But how can single people express their intention of adopting a child? And how do agencies find prospective parents for the children? How can they determine the true intentions of these people?

Many websites are actually posting profiles of parents who are looking for children whom they can adopt. Adoption.com is one of these websites. The great thing about this is that it is open to single parent adoption since it does not have biases about sexual orientation, marital status, sex, age and religion.

Another website is that of Lifetime Adoption Center, which seeks to help birth parents who can adopt their children. The children’s profiles, which contain their photos and interests, are posted in their website. Another service that it offers is finding parents who can adopt these children.

Domestic adoption is said to be the center’s specialty. This center, located at Northern California, has been in operation since 1986 and has helped many single parents in successfully adopting children.

This center also offers Free Informational Webinar for Prospective Adoptive Families, which aims to inform people about the steps on how to go about an adoption.

In a very recent article written by Eilish O’regan, Challenges for Parents Seeking to Adopt Overseas, the struggles of prospective single parents are highlighted.

According to this article, Irish people who want to go through an international adoption have been advised that most of the children available are either older or have special needs. This was based on a review for the past two years.

Ireland used to have a high rate of adoption but the rate dropped due to the challenges that the people face. One of the factors that affected it was the Hague Convention, which actually encouraged a stricter but safer process of adoption.

O’regan also noted that though adoption has been consistent in several countries, the main emphasis has been on the interests of the children rather than the prospective parents.More single people are adopting and providing homes to children, especially those with special needs or disabilities.

A prospective parent must be able to find a reputable agency that can help in clarifying matters regarding an adoption process, may it be domestic or international. It seems there is an increasing possibility of not being able to adopt newborns.

Instead, there are older children and those with special needs. But whatever the case is, they are still children who long for love – and a home. The challenge may be greater, but the reward, joy, is something they can treasure for life.

Single Parent Adoption Requirements: Important Things to Consider

By Unknown →
Single parent adoption nowadays, is not so uncommon anymore. Birth parents and agencies are already accepting them as prospective parents for their children. In fact, the number of cases is actually increasing in a lot of countries although there are still agencies that are reluctant about it.

Prior to going through this, it is vital to know all the single parent adoption requirements in a particular state or country, before going through the adoption process.

What do single parents need to accomplish? Once prospective parents decide or start considering adoption, they must gather as much information as they can about it in their country, if they are opting for domestic adoption.

If they are more interested in going through an international adoption, then it is better to check the laws governing adoption in that particular country. Furthermore, they must gather feedback and recommendations about the different reputable agencies that allow single parents to adopt.

History of these agencies must be verified well. Another option is to communicate directly with the birth or biological parents and make the necessary arrangements with them. They must know the responsibility that they are about to shoulder before they adopt a child because there is no turning back.

single parent adoption requirementsIt will be very helpful if parents can seek assistance from a lawyer that has expertise or a wide range of experience on this kind of cases. Lawyers can explain legal matters concerning adoption and give an appropriate advice.

Prospective adoptive parents must also ensure that they accomplish all the forms required and submit the necessary documents in due time. What can actually be difficult are the costs that the process entails.

Adopting parents will have to spend a lot for agency, traveling, etc. They must ensure that they are financially capable of paying for the adoption process. Prospective parents must be ready to wait since the waiting time can last for years, depending on a particular country.

It is essential to remember that not all adoption processes end up successfully. One must also be prepared for rejections.

Successful adoptions are results of a lot of factors such as the country’s particular laws and requirements, one’s financial and emotional capability which an adopting parent must prove, characteristics of the child that they may be requesting, the experience and background of the agency who is working on the case and a lot more.

The bottom line is that one must be totally informed about what to expect as soon as he or she even considers the idea of adopting a child. This will somehow make things easier for the prospective parent and will make him or her avoid surprises, especially in terms of costs.

Getting a prior feedback from another parent who has gone through an adoption and who has worked with an experienced agency can also help a prospective parent start on the right foot.

There is no better advice than from people who have gone through the process. But it is important also to bear in mind that each case is different and what works for another parent may not necessarily work for the other.

Foster Care Adoption: A Viable Option

By Unknown →
There are many single and married people who want to provide a family and home for children all over the world. But single parent adoption is not an easy task. It is a huge responsibility that requires one to have a strong sense of commitment, not just emotionally but physically and financially.

One may choose to go through a domestic or international adoption. Whatever one decides, there are rules and procedures that must be followed.

In some cases, adoptions by single parents are approved but in other cases, adoptions are delayed, or worse, disapproved. It is best therefore, to find other options that can help them adopt children successfully.

Single people who are willing to adopt may initially opt for foster care adoption. The primary purpose of foster parenting is to temporarily take care of the children while the birth or biological parents are still trying to resolve their current situation.

Eventually, it is expected that children and their birth parents will be brought together again as one family.

This can be difficult for those who have the intentions of adopting children because of the emotional attachment that can develop during the period that the children are staying with the foster parents.

This is something, though, that foster parents must be prepared to accept beforehand – that it is just temporary. There are some government rules though in some countries or states, which allow the termination of parental rights under certain circumstances.

For instance, in the US, the Federal Adoption and Safe Families Act of 1997 (P.L. 105-89) allows the termination of parental rights when a child has been in foster care for 15 out of 22 months “except on extenuating circumstances.”

The positive thing that comes out of this is that usually, the foster parents are the ones who eventually adopt the children. Although the main goal of foster parenting is really to have the children go back to their birth parents, sometimes, it is just not possible.

Birth parents may still be unprepared financially, perhaps, and children cannot wait forever. Their lives must go on. It is a wonderful opportunity though for single people who are willing to take care of the children for good and for the foster children who have already bonded with them for quite a time.

Prior to foster care parenting or adoption, it is imperative that parents discuss everything with the foster care agency to fully understand the system and the policies.

Otherwise, parents might end up being reluctant in letting go of the foster children when the time comes for them to reunite with their birth parents. Parents must be prepared to handle such situation because it is possible to happen.

But with patience, it is just a matter of time until they find children whom they can really adopt for good.

In foster parenting, their purpose of helping children will never be wasted, for it will always be selflessly directed to the same purpose, the common goal of providing a family for these children, whether it is with their birth parents, with them or with another parent.

Single Parenting Facts That Cannot Be Ignored

By Unknown →
Recent studies in the US show that the number of single mothers who have not gone through marriages is growing based on a 2010 Population Bureau’s report.

This may imply that a lot of women may not have a very strong belief anymore that marriages indeed work but may feel the need to respond to children who are badly in need of families, thus resorting to single parent adoption. This, however, needs further research.

Another significant fact is that single mother and fathers are, in fact, heading around 12.3 million families, based on the US Census Bureau.

It is amazing that more single parents are on the rise – and this does not necessarily mean that these are the divorced or the widowed only. This is also applicable to single women and men who opt for adoption.

More and more parents are courageously facing the challenges of raising children even without partners. But assuming the financial responsibility is much greater, as compared to married people.

In the findings based on the 2007-2012 Current Population Survey March, it appears that married mothers earn almost double of what single mothers earn. Single fathers earn more than single mothers but both still earn less as compared to married parents.

One of the possible implications is that most single parents cannot work full-time because they also need to take care of their children. Since childcare is expensive, it can be one of the least options for single parents. As a result, they take jobs that entail less work time.

Part-time jobs rarely generate enough income and rarely result to a more rewarding career. Moreover, these kinds of jobs do not come with medical insurance and company benefits similar to full-time and regular jobs. This, then, leads them lower towards financial incapacity.

About 54% of single parents work full-time and around 30% work part-time. Only 15% of custodial parents are fathers, and this fact means that more single mothers take custody of their children.

Facts show that there are more single mothers than single fathers in the US. 30% of children who are 18 yrs old or younger also live with single parents.

There are also very significant single parenting facts in other countries such as Canada. Valerie Robins discusses more about these in her article, Single Parenting: Just the Facts, Ma’am, Just the Facts.

Between 2006-2011, studies show that the number of single parent families has increased by 8% while the number of single mothers has increased by 6%. The total number of single father households consists of about 20% based on Canadian statistics.

In the US, for the past 10 years, single father households have increased by about 60%.

The increase is indeed quite alarming.  More research must be conducted to determine the reasons behind this significant change. Problems concerning these must be addressed and dealt with, especially money concerns.

It is a fact that single parents are burdened with the responsibilities of taking care of their children and taking care of household expenses.

For this reasons, the government must take the necessary measure to determine the root cause of this growing number because this also greatly affects the government’s financial ability to provide help for these families.

Children Waiting for Adoption: It’s Worth The Wait

By Unknown →
November is National Adoption Month and people everywhere in the world celebrate this month-long event. Recently, there was a mass adoption of about 47 families in Denver as their adoptions finally became official by a judge.

In Hillsborough, there were about 22 children who joined their new families. As expected, adoptive parents and children from various states and countries got excited about finally being able to join together as families during the celebration of National Adoption Month.

There are so many people with such caring hearts who are so much willing to adopt children and love them as their own.

No matter how difficult and how long the procedure is, they choose and decide to wait until that precious moment when they can finally hug their adopted children and call them as their sons or daughters.

While infants may not have inkling as to what exactly is going on, older children are quite aware that they are in for single parent adoption. Imagine how excited, apprehensive – or scared they may be at the thought of going to a different home, with a new and different parent.

It must be so strange for them.  On the other hand, they may be experiencing mixed emotions.  Their minds are probably reeling with hundreds of questions. Will she (or he) like me? Will I like her (or him)?

Questions will find their answers longer than expected. Even with hesitance, there seems to be a deep-seated feeling of hope, of being found, of being matched with people who are as eager to love them as to be loved.

In their website, AdoptUSKids features many children waiting for adoption, which is in a database. Information includes each child’s location, interests, skills, developmental conditions, personality and needs that must be addressed.

Through this website, stories of children who have happily gone through the adoption process are shared, as an inspiration to other children who are still waiting, and as inspiration to prospective adoptive parents.

Since 2002, AdoptUSKids has been in operation under the US Children’s Bureau, with goals of making people aware that there are lots of children who are in need of families and finding suitable parents who can be matched with these children.

They provide services such as on-and-off site technical assistance to the US States for a very active recruitment, campaigns for public awareness, a toll-free information and referral line for families and professionals, financial support for foster and adoptive families through grants, and evaluation and research to continuously improve the adoption process.

The group Adopting.com, however, provides listing of children still waiting for adoption in their website. One can choose among the different states, from where he or she wants to adopt a child.

The information features the name of agency that can be contacted, placement time and involvement of such state in Hague Adoption Convention agreement. One of the positive things about this website is that it also features profiles of parents who are willing to adopt through private adoption.

Parents who are willing to adopt may post their profiles by coordinating with agencies or organizations who work with prospective parents and children waiting for adoption. It is important though, to be extra careful and to ensure that these groups are authentic organizations that deal with foster care or adoption.

There are many children waiting and many people wanting to adopt. It is just a matter of time until parents finally meet their children and children finally meet their parents. When that happens, it will definitely be worth the wait.

Available Adoption Situations

By Unknown →
There are various reasons why birth parents want to send their child for adoption. Some may not be ready for the responsibility in terms of financial means and some may not be mature enough or emotionally ready to deal with being a parent.

While some may feel that it is a burden to have a child, especially at such a ‘seemingly wrong time of their lives’, others consider it a blessing to have one.

It is easy to judge the birth parents if nobody knows the whole story about them but knowing what has made them arrive at such a decision can help other people understand where they are coming from.

Birth or biological parents have diverse situations. Some mothers have been under the influence of drugs at the time of pregnancy. Others are alcoholics or chain smokers.

Under these circumstances, if parents have not been able to undergo rehabilitation, it can be expected that they are not in their right mind to enter the world of parenthood. Other parents have children with special needs and perhaps due to lack of funds, the birth parents will not be able to afford therapies needed by the children.

Other parents have very wonderful dreams for their children, most parents do. They long for their children to be adopted by loving and happily married couples, mostly, although some are very open to single parent adoption.

Knowing the family story of the child to be adopted can help the adopting parents be more prepared of what they are getting into, more aware of how they can get to know and understand the child better.

There are various available adoption situations and these are constantly being posted online by birth parents to find people who are willing to adopt their child. In a way, it can be a positive thing, because the prospective adoptive parents can easily find children to adopt.

On the other hand, it is important to verify the websites where such situations are being posted. Not all of them may be exactly true, and finding that out that it is indeed not true may lead to feelings of disappointment for the adopting parents.

It is also recommended that the adopting parents check the agency that posted the adoption situation or advertisements. What are available adoption situations and what information is usually included in such?

Adoption situations usually include important details such as the age of the child, nationality, exposure to medicines, toxins and the like. Aside from this, current conditions, medications, therapies are also sometimes specified.

Other situations mention the fees required to be paid and some basic requirements. Admittedly, these situations posted online can be very beneficial to the agency, birth parents and the adoptive parents in finding the ‘perfect match’ easily.

These are usually based on interviews with birth parents and some questionnaires which they fill up. But while websites assist agencies and birth parents in finding adoptive parents, one must remember that they are not investigative agencies.

Thus, they cannot guarantee that the information posted is indeed authentic.  It is therefore an absolutely necessity to verify information first prior to dealing with birth parents. This will save the prospective adoptive parents a lot of trouble in the future.

Countries that Allow Single Parent Adoption

By Unknown →
Adoption, whether done by married or single people, does not merely spring from one’s wanting to have a child, but rather from a vocation or calling that can leave other people puzzled. It is something not meant for everyone, which is why only some can understand the joy that it brings to the adopting parents.

Once a person has considered the possibility of going through an international single parent adoption, it is vital to check the countries that allow this as well as their current policies on the matter. It is a known fact that birth or biological parents may not be so keen in having their children adopted by single parents.

Even some agencies may be reluctant to the idea and more so, if the adopting parent comes from another country. There are countries which allow international adoption but require a specific period of residency in order to be qualified while others strictly prohibits it altogether.

In light of these, it is a prerequisite to gather authentic information and feedback from friends, families and a lot of people who have gone through this to ensure a successful adoption. Moreover, this can help avoid mistakes and problems other people have encountered during their application process.

What are the countries that allow single parent adoption? UK and the US are some of the popular ones that allow single parent adoption. However, since they are among those countries which have made agreements in the Hague Convention, there are certain procedures that must be followed to gain the approval of the Convention, that is, to protect children child trafficking.

countries that allow single parent adoption
Adopting parents must go to an accredited adoption agency (by the Convention) to begin the adoption process. A single parent must be at least 21 years old to adopt a child from UK.

Vietnam is also among those that allow adoption by sole parents. A person must be at least 25 years old in order to adopt from this country. Countries that used to allow single parent adoption are Guatemala, Cambodia and Kazakhstan, temporarily forbid this.

For a time, China has also stopped allowing this kind of adoption but has eventually opened its doors again. Like China, South Korea is also one of the countries that allow but both have stricter rules and longer wait time.

Adopting infants or preschool aged children from China is also a bit difficult especially since signing the agreement in the Hague Adoption Convention. However, they are known for having well-established adoption rules and procedures.

The website of Intercountry Adoption Bureau of Consular Affairs – U.S. Department of State features a broad record of information about the adoption requirements and procedures in various countries as well as the US laws in adopting from these countries.

Ethiopia is not a Hague Adoption Convention country although it has its own guidelines that must be strictly followed. An adopting parent will have to visit Ethiopia at least twice. Couples who have been married for about 5 years have more edge in being approved.

Although married couples are preferred over single adopting parents, Ethiopia has started allowing single parents to adopt from their country beginning February of this year.

The Philippines is one of the countries that signed the agreement for Hague Adoption Convention. It has residency requirements of at least 3 years prior to the adoption petition. Moreover, the adopting parent must stay in the country until the adoption process has been finalized.

These requirements can be waived, though, if the adopting parent is a former Filipino citizen and the child to be adopted is a relative from until the 4th degree, or the child of his or her spouse. The adopting parent must be at least 27 years of age and at least 16 years older than the child at the time of the application.

These are just some of the countries that allow single parent adoption. Although rules vary in several countries and the process tends to be a bit difficult, more opportunities are still apparently available for single parents and this can be viewed positively.

What parents need to work on is finding the countries that best suit the requirements that they can easily comply with.

Safe Ways to Enjoy Single Parent Vacations

By Unknown →
Who would have thought that single parents will be given such importance, as they become the target customers of many traveling agencies particularly in the US and UK? It is absolutely a positive and amazing thing.

Years ago, they are not entitled to travel discounts because packages usually include a partner in order to qualify but now, there are more than exciting packages meant especially for them.

These are the concerns of a lot of single parents, who may have gone through a divorce, death of spouse or partner or single parent adoption.

In Matthew Link’s article Single Parents Travel: More Resorts Offer Deal, it is thought that the reasons behind the change are more than just to accept the idea that there are single-parent families who go on vacations.

It can also be because of the decelerating economy in the travel industry. As travel agencies find ways to generate profits, they have opened their minds to the idea of including single parent-families in their target market.

Brenda Elwell, author of the Single Parent Travel Handbook, realized this need to address the increasing demand for single parent vacations as well as the need to customize a convenient package meant specifically for them.

single parent vacations
In 2000, she put up the first single parent traveling agency in the US, Single Parent Travel. Nowadays, there are a lot of traveling agencies for single parents. Although there are very little changes in terms of costs, there are quite helpful considerations.

Teresa Plowright, in her article, Single Parent Travel, discusses the difficulties that single parents experience when traveling with their children and also highlights some of the promotions they get.

Aside from the costs, sole parents also have other concerns such as not feeling comfortable in mingling with married couples – which is sometimes unavoidable. In light of this, more traveling agencies offer tours specifically for single parent families to ensure that parents do not feel awkward.

At the same time, this gives them the chance to meet other single parent families like theirs, with the company of their children. In traveling with children, single parents are in a more risky situation because there is usually just one adult to watch over the children and take care of them.

Plowright emphasizes the importance of being aware of the documents that need to be prepared when traveling to other countries.

There have been cases of abductions of children of single parents by another parent and for this reason, parents must be really careful and must take the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of their children.

When crossing from US to Canada or vice versa, single parents must bring and present copies of legal documents that prove that they are the custodial parents and are given permission by the non-custodial  parent to go out of the country.

Other documents that must be secured include identification cards, passports, birth certificate, citizenship card and permanent resident card among others. Prior to traveling, it is therefore advised that parents check entrance policies in the country where they are headed to.

This will help them avoid unnecessary problems that may further cause delay.  If parents are more prepared, then they will be able to ensure the safety of their children more.
